Long Beach Half Marathon -

Finished the Long Beach Half Marathon, the second race in the California Dreamin' Series (Huntington Beach Half Feb 2010). This was my third in as many months.

SF - 1:49:52
AFC - 1:54:24
LB - 2:09:50

No PR yesterday, but definitely one of my favorite races. the wave starts, while not the most organized, left very little congestion in the beginning. for the first 10K, the course winds through downtown long beach and out towards the queen mary and back, breaking up any monotony. there are two overpass ascents, but other than that - flat. At the halfway point the runners pass the start line area - which makes this race ideal for spectators as they can cheer their runners on 3 different times w/o moving more than 50 feet (that is assuming the spectators get out of their cars =P). then comes the 'worst' part of the race. i use the quotes b/c, no one should ever complain about running along 3 miles of boardwalk. yes, it's narrow and yes, it's crowded. but this is also the time in the race where people start to fade and picking them off at such close of a proximity (10 feet wide at most) can be entertaining and make the boardwalk portion fly by. there's a hair pin at mile ten, with the 11th mile ascending to the race's peak elevation (50ft at most). this sets up a fast 2 mile finish. there's nothing like running downhill to make you feel like the fastest runner alive. the last quarter mile was deafening, that always helps to make ur feetsies turn over a little faster.

the weather was great and so was the company. just missed a PR for janelle, but that's cool. we'll get 'em next year!
